1 – Begin training your children from day one (Psalm 22:9)
From the very first day of his birth, God was at work in the life of David. David had heard about the Lord from the very day he came into the world. There were several godly men who heard about the Lord from the day of their birth. E.g. Samuel and Paul. The spiritual training is not to be put off or left to the father. See Proverbs 1:8 & 6:20. If you wait too long the time will be gone.
2 – Train your children to honour you (Exodus 20:12)
Many times in the Bible children are to honour their parents. See Exodus 20:12 & Ephesians 6:1-3. It is not written for children. It is written so parents will know what their children are supposed to be doing and ensure that they do it. You should not let your children talk back to you with disrespect. They must accept the authority of their parents.
3 – To do the little unnoticed things (1 Samuel 1:6-28; 2:19)
Hannah did the right thing. She gave Samuel up to the Lord and every year she faithfully brought him some clothing. It was a small thing that won no applause but it was a practical thing that showed she was a mother who cared.
4 – Let your children put God first (Luke 2:43-51)
Mary and Joseph lost Jesus for three days when he was only twelve. Mary was upset. Jesus gives a response that Joseph and Mary don’t understand. Are we willing to let our children put God first? What example are you showing to your children? We can become too concerned with school, sports, etc that we prevent our children from putting God first.
5 – How can we apply this to our lives?
-
Make a conscious choice to connect your mothering to your faith in God. So in many things in life are connected to faith – trusting in God.
-
What way can children honour their parents? There are so many practical things. You could write them a card, buy them a present or drop round unexpectedly. They loved you and looked after you – even if it may not have been perfectly. You parents may not have been perfect but then neither were you!
