1 – The Worldwide Rebellion (vs. 1-3)

Observe the wild commotion of the many, (vs. 1), the mighty (vs. 2a), the outward tumult and the inward cause (vs. 1), the array of kings and the plot of the rulers. (vs. 2a).

• The object of their enmity – Jehovah and His Messiah (vs 2b).
• Their daring proposal – to snap the bands of divine restraint and to fling away the cords of the yoke. (vs. 3).

That is a picture of the world today and it will bring down what follows in the final verses.

2 – The Divine Indignation (vs. 4-6)

• Mark here God’s laughter of derision (vs. 4).
• His utterance of displeasure (vs. 5).
• His act of disclosure (vs. 6).

Laugh – derision – wrath – displeasure. What terrible ideas these words hold! Whatever you do, don’t have God against you!

3 – The Great Declaration (vs. 7-9)

It is about God’s Messianic King. He is divinely attested (vs. 7). The “begetting” here does not refer to his birth but to his resurrection. See Acts 13:33. His dominion is to be universal. (vs. 8) Compare “the utmost parts of the earth” with Acts 1:8. The gift is in response to the request – “ask”. Then there is Messiah’s victorious rule (vs. 9). This will happen someday soon.

4 – The Solemn Exhortation (vs. 10-12)

Be wise, be instructed, serve, rejoice, kiss and trust. Dread that “lest” (vs. 12). God’s King is His Son. It is better to “kiss” Him than that God should “laugh” at you. Yet kiss Him not as did Judas.
