Where have all the heroes gone? Our society is obsessed with celebrity of status. The cult of celebrity is replacing the reality of heroes. Where are the godly heroes? We are to serve no other gods. Don’t cry over anything that can’t cry over you. The psalm is a Mikhtam psalm. These are our words to God rather than God’s words to men. This psalm tells us that God is:-
1 – My Protector – “preserve me”
The world is not a safe place. There has been and still are many wars and conflicts. There are thousands dying each day of famine and disease.
2 – My Refuge – “I will take refuge in thee”
David had been used to taking refuge when being hounded by Saul. He ran to God. See Psalm 46, 62 & 91. God is our only impregnable, delightful place of retreat.
3 – My Master – “Thou art my Lord”
David is at a place of humble surrender. Are you God-centred or self-centred?
4 – My Provider – “I have no good besides Thee”
Do you have gratitude in the midst of all circumstances? See James 1:17.
5 – My Inheritance – “The LORD is the portion of mine inheritance”
The psalmist was content with his lot in life. David had a better inheritance than land or animals. God himself was David’s inheritance.
6 – My Counsellor – “I bless Yahweh who is my counsellor”
God reveals the way that leads to life. God counsels us through his Word. It is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
7 – My Focus – “I shall not be moved”
David would not be shaken. E.g. Psalm 62. David will constantly fix his eyes upon God. We need to do this on a day to day basis. This leads to joy.
8 – My Hope – “For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell”
David believed he would not have eternal separation from God. (vs. 10) His relationship with God will continue. This is also a Messianic verse. Death is not the end!
9 – My Life – “thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore”
There is joy now and pleasures in eternity. (vs. 11).
