How Great Is Our God – Job 25-28

The consistent theme throughout the book of Job is God. The three friends of Job are trying to use God for their own purposes. They have decided that God needs to be defended and they need to defame Job. Job has a different approach to God. Job doesn’t understand why God doesn’t rescue him but exalts Him.

1 – God’s sovereignty is unrestricted (Job 25:1-3)

Bilbad declares that God rules and reigns over all. We would applaud Bilbad if he stopped at this but he then uses the statement to accuse Job. God is still in control and ruling on His throne.

2 – God’s righteousness in unequalled (Job 25:4-6)

Job is so pure and righteous that no one can approach Him. Man is born of a woman and inherits a sinful nature. See Psalm 51:5. The conclusion of Bilbad is that Job is a worm and a maggot. Some words of comfort from a “friend”. This is the last words of Bilbad. Thank God! Bilbad takes the truth of God and uses it to build a case against a righteous man. He is clubbing Job!

3 – God’s authority is unchallenged (Job 26:1-14)

Job is now speaking.

  • God has authority over the realm of the dead (vs. 5-6) – If God knows what is going on in the world of the dead then He won’t have any problem knowing what is going on in the land of the living.
  • God has authority over the reach of the heavens (vs. 7) – Job believes that God created the heavens and the earth. God stretched out the heavens like a tent.
  • God has authority over the rotation of the earth (vs7b) – God created the earth and it just hangs there not connected to anything. There was a time when this was not considered a scientific statement. It used to be that scientists believed that the earth was flat.
  • God has authority over the routine of the waters (vs. 8-13) – God controls the skies with their water. He controls the water cycle. The earth is declared to be round. God has control over the oceans, lakes and rivers of the earth. God’s authority is unchallenged.

4 – God’s justice is unavoidable (Job 27)

Job believes that God has not shown justice to him but he does not say that God is unjust. He knows God is just.

  • Job’s defence (vs. 1-6) – Job does not understand what is going on in his life. He will however defend his integrity. Job does not know what we know. God s showing Satan his faithful servant loves him despite the awful suffering.
  • Job’s demand (vs. 7-12) – Job now considers his three “friends” as they really are – they are his three enemies. He calls upon God to treat them as opponents and not as companions. They will realise that they were wrong about Job.
  • Job’s declaration (vs. 13-18) – Job is realising in his mind what he would like to happen to his friends. When God makes things right they will die! He sees them suffering for the ugly things they have said. He is quoting their words back to them. They had said things about him which is not true. They will be hanged by their own words. Be careful how you deal with God’s people! Vengeance belongs to the Lord.

5 – God’s wisdom is unexplainable (Job 28)

  • God’s wisdom cannot be sought (vs. 1-7) – These are all things that are mined for by man. Deeper and deeper people tunnel to find treasure. God’s wisdom cannot be sought by mere human effort. It requires humility and spiritual perception.
  • God’s wisdom cannot be bought (vs. 12-19) – You cannot go somewhere and put a cheque on the counter and buy God’s wisdom. If you could sell God’s wisdom you would be the wealthiest person in the world. People hire consultants for wisdom. This wisdom cannot be bought.
  • God’s wisdom must be taught (vs. 20-28) – Wisdom must be received from God. He is the only one who can give us the wisdom we need. The Bible teaches us in many verses that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Job was God’s servant and one who feared God and shunned evil. Job was energised by his fear in God. The Bible tells us to not be wise be wise in our own eyes. Pride prevents us from the humility that we need for God’s wisdom. Our knowledge of God is just a whisper. We are only getting a whisper of what God is like. We cannot fully understand all there is to know about God. See Isaiah 55:8-9. God cannot be brought down to our level.
