Whose Is The Kingdom? – 1 Kings 1:1-53

This book of Kings covers approximately 400 years (From around 970-570 BC). At this time King David is slightly on the decline and there is a decline that continues throughout the book. However, it is evident that God is faithful throughout. David is past his best. David is very old and can’t keep warm. This is very human and real. They come up with a plan. The beautiful girl is to keep him warm. Nothing sexual happens. David’s family were not a credit to him. David had never rebuked his sons.

1 – Pride threatens the Kingdom of God (vs. 1-10)

David was not a great father to his children. They had no boundaries. Adonijah had a lot of strong characteristics but he was filled with pride. A life that is filled with pride becomes less useful to God. To be concerned with style, image and reputation can be damaging. If you believe the hype then God will humble you.

2 – Faithfulness protects the Kingdom of God (vs. 11-27)

Adonijah has a great party but it was a selected party. Those close to David were not invited. Adonijah was having his coronation party! Nathan finds out about the party. It was Nathan who confronted people in his prophetic ministry. The word then gets back to David. We sometimes need someone to stir up the complacent!

3 – Passion promotes the Kingdom of God (vs. 28-48)

David is suddenly stirred into action. His passion is renewed. He makes sure that Solomon is to be enthroned. He won’t allow Adonijah to take over. David is gripped with a holy discontent. We all need this! He wants to get back in control and not settle for less than God’s best.

4 – Submission marks the Kingdom of God (vs. 49-53)

Adonijah’s gig is still on when Jonathon is dispatched to break up the coronation party. The guests leave quickly. Adonijah is fearful for his life. Solomon tells Adonijah to go home. He is now in submission rather than pride. God is looking for people to join His kingdom. You can’t get in with pride. You need to be submissive.
