Surveying The Construction – 1 Kings 9:1-28

It was a job well done. There is a certain pride in building something that looks good. In this chapter the building is finished. God now shows up to speak to Solomon. God is in the process of building people rather than buildings.

1 – The priority of faithfulness (vs. 3-9)

Notice three things:-

  • Blessing (vs. 3) – God had heard Solomon’s prayer for blessing. God will consecrate this Temple. God’s presence is assured and God will bless.
  • Assurance (vs. 4-5) – God makes an assurance to the people. He says “I will”. It is a conditional blessing that requires faithfulness on Solomon’s part. God has expectations from us!
  • Warning (vs. 6-9) – This is sobering. There are consequences if they don’t walk with integrity. The consequences are far-reaching with much to lose.

2 – The practice of kingship (vs. 10-28)

It was business as usual. It was back to ruling and reigning!

  • Politics (vs. 10-14).
  • Defence (vs. 15-24).
  • Religion (vs. 25).
  • Commerce (vs. 26-28).

Yet Solomon’s downfall is only a few chapters away! The Temple will end up as rubble. Did Solomon not hear the words of warning? We should take heed, consecrate ourselves and listen to what God says.
