If you know the result does this motivate you or not? We are to have biblical confidence. Do you read a murder mystery from the front or do you take a peek at the back of the book first? Read the Bible. When you look at the back pages, you know how things are going to end.
1 – Confirmation of God’s purposes (vs. 1-6)
These cause people to do things they might not normally do. There was an emotional tie between Ahab and Jehoshaphat caused by the ties between Israel and Judah. Jehoshaphat goes along with Ahab’s scheme. Watch out family loyalty does not compromise loyalty to the Lord Jesus. The loyalty to Jesus is higher. We must do what is right.
-
Theology (vs. 3-5) – Solomon had a theological reason to build the Temple. It had been passed on by David to Solomon. We are to live in the purposes of God. It gives out ministry energy. Otherwise we are just messing about! It is our foundation.
-
Request (vs. 6) – On the basis of what Solomon believes he is able to say “give me the wood!” God’s purposes are worked out with anyone He chooses! God used “unsaved” timber! God has used all kinds of people to His glory.
2 – Anticipation of God’s kingdom (vs. 7-11)
Hiram was a pagan king, yet David and Solomon had an impact on him due to their reputation. Solomon offered Hiram whatever he wanted as payment for the timber to build the temple (1 Kings 5:6). Hiram did not take unfair advantage, asking only for food for his household. At the same time, Hiram did expect to be paid. His service and the service of His people were not a gift or a sacrifice. Solomon continued the friendly relationship between Israel and Lebanon.
3 – Demonstration of God’s wisdom (vs. 12-18)
Solomon’s wisdom was evident in the way he employed this great workforce. First, he wisely delegated responsibility to men like Adoniram. Second, instead of making the Israelites work constantly away from Israel and home, he worked them in shifts. Solomon showed incredible generosity. He had an army of accountants who kept count of everything. Generosity builds bridges. Solomon is given wisdom by God. There is a balance between wisdom and good organisational skills. Solomon was part of the team. Even though he knew the Temple would be built, he wanted to be part of it. It was time to build.
