We are not to take the name of the Lord in vain but to take the name of the Lord in victory.
There is personality in the name of Jehovah. (Yahweh) The name Jehovah means an everlasting God who keeps his promises. The word “Elohim” is also used which speaks of God’s strength and power. There is power in the name of God. When David came against Goliath he came in the name of the Lord. See John 14:14. We are to do everything in the power of the name of the Lord. There is protection in the name of the Lord. See Proverbs 18:10. There is provision in the name of the Lord. John 16:23-24. There should therefore be praise in his name.
1 – How to teach our children to not take God’s name in vain
Vain – Empty of content, without thought. We must teach our children to not use profanity. A profane mouth shows a profane heart. The only thing you get in return is God’s judgement. See Ephesians 5:3. Foolish jesting that includes the name of God is not funny. The name of God should be taken seriously. The name of God should not be used in hypocrisy. See Isaiah 48:1ff. There are too many people who are religious in church and hypocrites in the home. Be consistent
2 – How to teach our children to not take God’s name in victory
See Colossians. The last name given for God in the Bible is Jesus. Here are three:-
-
Wear the name. See Acts 11:36 & 2 Timothy 2:19 – If you wear the name you need to walk the name.
-
Share the name. See Malachi 3:16. We need to have a fear for the Lord.
-
Bear the name. The name of Jesus is more hated than any other name on earth. See Acts 5:40-42. It is also one of the most loved names on earth. A Christian will suffer shame for the Lord.
