See 1 Corinthians 5:7 & Hebrews 11:28. I’ve been redeemed for 2,000 years but I only found out about it 20 years ago! This passage is a classic Bible example of redemption.
1 – Man’s need for redemption
-
Sin – See Romans 6:19.
-
Death – See Hebrews 2:15.
-
Bondage to Satan – See 1 John 5:19.
These are our three taskmasters.
2 – Under the sentence of death
Moses is told the nature of the last plague and around midnight Moses tells Pharaoh of the plague. This plague applies to the Israelites as well as the Egyptians. We are also under the sentence of death. We have been accused of sin and found to be guilty and the sentence is eternal death. We need deliverance and God has provided the means.
3 – God’s means of redemption
A one-year male was to be watched for four days to prove that the animal is pure and spotless. On the fourteenth day the throat is to be slit and the blood shed. The blood is to be put on the doorposts by hyssop. The lamb is the roasted and eaten.
God will passover (protect – like a hen protecting her chickens) those with the blood sprinkled on the door. The death angel of God will not be able to enter the household. The people are to keep this feast every year and tell their children the story of what happened that night.
This is a picture of what happened to us. John the Baptist called Jesus Christ the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. See Exodus 12. It is a picture of the way of salvation that God was going to prepare. Like the Passover Lamb, Jesus dies a violent death. It was for our sins that He died. It was a substitutionary death. It is remembered in the Lord’s Supper. There are only seven mentions of Israel observing the Passover in the Bible.
The provision has been made by God but it must be applied to our lives before we are saved, even as the people of Israel applied the blood to the doorposts. See Hebrews 11:28 – done by faith.
