DL Moody stated after a life time of experience that any man or woman who dishonours their mother and father would not prosper. This is a confirmation of what the Bible says. If there is no respect in the home then there is likely to be no respect in other areas of society. The home is where we should learn to honour our father and mother. We are to honour (take seriously).
1 – Honour by the life that I live
We are to obey our parents when we are children. See Colossians 3:20. There is great danger in disobedience. See Romans 1:28-32. A child who was continually rebellious in the Old Testament was put to death. Disobedience to parents is a sign of the last days. See 2 Timothy 3:1-4. See Ephesians 6:1-3. If you want to live a long life then don’t be disobedient to your parents! It is obedience in the Lord. Children should not steal, kill or allow themselves to be prostituted by their parents. There is a higher obedience to the Lord.
2 – Honour by the load that you lift
You are to help your parents. You sin against your parents if you don’t do any work in the house. Parents are to encourage their children how to do jobs around the house. You are to care for your parents when they get older. See Matthew 15:3ff. If you don’t, then you are a hypocrite. There are no excuses. See 1 Timothy 5:4-8. Children are to provide for their parents.
3 – Honour by the lessons that you learn
See Proverbs 1:8-9. We need to learn the lessons that our parents pass onto us. We need to learn from our parent’s experiences. We honour our parents when we listen to what they say.
4 – Honour by the love that we lavish
Our parents would often give their lives for us. Keep in touch with your parents and help them now. How awful to be a thankless child. Only a perfect child deserves perfect parents! It will not happen. You need to be respectful to your parents. See Leviticus 19:3, 20:9 & Proverbs 30:17. Honour your father and mother so that things will be well with you.
