The God of Creation – Genesis 1:1

The book of Genesis is the book of the beginnings of everything except God Himself. We have the commencement of creation, Satan, sin and more. The book of Revelation is the end of these things. We presented with the God of Creation. What can we say about the ten words of this first verse?

1 – A foundational statement

  • It is foundational to human reasoning – It is logical to believe in God. Atheism is not logical. Man could not be created from nothing or random chance. If there is a watch it is logical to assume there was a watchmaker. If you see a beautiful building it is logical that there was an architect and builder.
  • It is foundational to biblical revelation – This is the stone upon which the Bible is built. God has revealed himself to man. Man cannot get to know God by his own efforts. The Bible is the one true revelation of God. The Bible contains numerous references to the book of Genesis. If you don’t believe in creation, then how can you believe in the resurrection? The Bible contains many great promises. If they are not true, then what hope do we have?
  • It is foundational to personal reality – It gives sense to human existence. Where else did you come from? You are not a product of chance. You are a creation of God. We were created in the image of God. See Colossians 1:16-17. You are the creation of God. You can live your life with purpose

2 – A factual statement

This is not something that we are making up. It is true. When we get to heaven we will not be singing about evolution. We will be singing about our creator. It was God who created the heavens and the earth. You can believe what God says.

  • It refutes human myths. See Acts 7:22. Moses grew up with all the Egyptian creation myths. Daniel grew up with the Babylonian creation myth. The Bible account refutes.
  • It refutes all human philosophies. This one verse destroys the philosophies of atheism, polytheism, pantheism, fatalism, materialism and deism. You can’t erase God from this universe. See Psalm 14:1. Only a fool says there is no God.
  • It refutes human theories. It was God who created and who has always existed. The theory of evolution is refuted by this verse. This theory has become prevalent in the academic and scientific world. It is wrong. God created the heavens and the earth.

3 – A functional statement

  • It is a statement of God’s revelation. We cannot scientifically prove the origin of the Universe. Science has to look at present phenomenon to theorise the past. It is faith that tells us Genesis 1:1 is true. See Job 38:3ff.
  • It is a statement of man’s response. See Hebrews 11:3. The way we understand that God created the world is by faith. The evolutionists have to accept evolution by faith. If God did not create you then you don’t need morals and you are not accountable to a Holy God. Then you are no different than any other animals. But there is a God who created man in his image and the world. We are different from the animals. We are accountable to a Holy God. Death is not the end. We have a faithful creator who looks after our souls. He came in the person of Jesus Christ to die for our sins and save our souls. He is the God of a new creation – a Christian.
