Isaac is a powerful type of Jesus in the Old Testament. He was a special son of Abraham. He was unique as he was a child of promise. He was supernaturally born when Abraham was 100 years old and his wife Sarah unable to have children. See Romans 4:19. They were a couple of “old codgers” and Sarah laughed when she heard from the angel that she is going to have a baby. This is why they named this baby “Isaac” which means “laughter”. There are many spiritual lessons we can learn from this story.
1 – The eldest servant
See Genesis 15:2. Eliezer means “God my help, witness and defence”. He is a type of the Holy Spirit. His chief task in the story is to talk about the son. He was Abraham’s faithful servant. Eliezer did not serve his master in order to magnify himself, but to magnify the one he served.
2 – Rebekah was a divine choice (vs. 14)
She was a virgin and she was God’s choice just like the Church is the spotless bride of Christ. See Ephesians 1:4; 2 Thessalonians 2:14 and John 15:16.
3 – Rebekah was from Abraham’s country (vs. 3)
See 2 Corinthians 6:14. She had to be a godly young woman. The bride had to be separated from the world. We are to be in the world but not of the world.
4 – Rebekah passed the water test (vs. 20)
Eliezer set a test. To give water for the camels was a favour rarely bestowed. Eliezer prayed for the sign and it came about. God wants us to repent and be baptised in water.
5 – Rebekah was prepared for Isaac by gifts (vs. 22-53)
She was given earrings, clothes and jewellery to dress up to meet Isaac. The Holy Spirit is preparing the Church to meet Jesus by giving us the gifts/fruits of the Holy Spirit. See 1 Corinthians 12:9-10 and Galatians 5:22ff. This is how God is preparing His Church to meet Jesus. See 1 Corinthians 1:7 and Ephesians 5:17. We must be a pure Church like Rebekah.
6 – Rebekah was protected by men (vs. 32-59)
These men were there for protection from any evil. Rebekah was very beautiful and might be in danger on the way back. The Church also has men to protect it from evil. See Ephesians 4:11. The leadership of the church needs our support.
7 – Rebekah fell in love with someone she had never met (vs. 58)
See 1 Peter 1:18. Having not seen Jesus we love Him. We see the invisible. Faith sees the invisible. See 1 Corinthians 13:7 and Galatians 6:5. Rebekah had faith, believed and loved.
8 – Rebekah’s meeting place (vs. 63-65)
They meet not in her home or his home. They meet in between. Isaac went out to mediate in the evening. It was the well of “Him who seeth”. The Church will not meet the Lord in heaven or on earth. They will meet Him in between. They will meet in the air. Isaac knew Rebekah by the clothes she was wearing. She was wearing his clothes! The Church will be recognised by Christ as they will be wearing His clothes. Isaac took Rebekah into his tent and loved her. The Lord will do the same to His Church.
