Reconciliation – Genesis 43:15-34

The brothers have been apart for twenty years. Joseph will eventually reveal himself to his brothers.

1 – A necessary journey (vs. 1-14)

They would all learn tremendous lessons. God often asks us to go on a necessary journey. We may not want to go but it is necessary.

2 – A necessary reunion (vs. 15-30)

Joseph is excited. He is looking through the eyes of forgiveness. Joseph wants to know if the brothers have learnt their lesson. They come back for Simeon and bring with them Benjamin. The brothers were suspicious of Joseph. Their consciences are pricked. They were afraid that their sin with Joseph would be found out. Joseph’s dreams about his brothers bowing to him, comes to pass.

3 – A journey and a reunion (vs. 31-34)

All concerned experienced amazing grace. They were all seated according to their age. Benjamin has five times more food than the other brothers. The other brothers are astonished. Joseph could have exacted revenge but instead he shows undeserved favour – grace. Instead of having them punished, he has a party! It is a time of celebration.

This is like the story of the prodigal son. Instead of blame, there is forgiveness. Instead of guilt, there is freedom. There is no way to earn. It can only be freely received.
